Why Level Your Travel Trailer?

Leveling a trailer will make sure that the vehicle isn’t inclined to one side, which can prevent you from using it (slide-outs, interior doors, kitchen appliances, and so on) properly and even damage it.

Find a Suitable Location

Look for a firm and relatively flat spot to park your trailer. Avoid certain problematic materials, like sand and gravel, as they can shift under pressure. It can be difficult to find the exact spot you need at a busy campground. However, this extra effort can help you level the trailer quickly and smoothly.

Level from Side to Side

This step may require you to drive your trailer back and forth a couple times, till you are satisfied that it is completely levelled.

Begin by figuring out the level to which you’d need to raise one side of the trailer. Do this while the trailer is still attached to the tow vehicle. Move the trailer a little bit forward and place the leveling blocks where the tires will rest. This will help you lift the rig easily.

Reverse to the final position and check the evenness. Repeat this process till the trailer is completely leveled.

Secure the Trailer and Disconnect

Check to see that the leveling is correct and use chocks to secure the tires. This will prevent it from moving when you will detach the towing vehicle to move it out of the way.

Level from Front to Back

Adjust the hitch using the jack until you can see that your trailer is leveled from this angle, too. Lock the hitch, once you are done, and secure it firmly.

Stabilize

In the final step you’ll want to stabilize the trailer. The stabilizers at each corner of the camper act as jacks to hold it in place. Avoid using them for the leveling process as they can only support the weight of the trailer. Also, they aren’t as efficient and can throw the others off while you are adjusting one. You will have to go all over it to adjust and align all the four jacks.
